A brief history of Fathers Day
The celebration of Fathers Day as we know it today is less than one hundred years old. It is widely believed that Ms Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Washington, USA was the first person to have set aside this day to acknowledge the important role played by the Father as we currently do in the same way for Mother’s Day.
However, some scholars are of the opinion that the origins of Fathers Day is in actual fact much older. They say that the custom of honoring ones Father on a special day dates back over 4,000 years and believe that the origin of Fathers Day is not a recent phenomenon as many believe it to be. Rather such scholars claim that the tradition of Fathers Day can be traced in the ruins of Babylon and have recorded that a young boy called Elmesu carved a Fathers Day message on a tablet of clay, to serve as an equivalent of the modern-day Fathers Day Card if you will. Apparently, Elmesu wished his Babylonian Father good health and a long life. Although there is no actual recorded data of what became of Elmesu and his Father, the tradition of celebrating Fathers Day remains evermore popular in several countries throughout the world including:
